I probably would have stuck it out with Havens but in the long run, Ceciliani might be the smarter/healthier choice. And I still have hopes for Dylan Owen. So he would have come at R.A. Dickey’s or Cahoon’s expense.

Wow!! JD,
Love the 75% comment-Wilpon must have been channelling you last month. Beltran is truly a great player who once was a 5-tool monster…under rated? Absolutely. Well compensated for his efforts? Yeah! But, every one of these guys who were free-agent superstars definitely are going downhill by year 7 of a long term deal. Still, he’s at 144 OPS+ (Mike Schmidt was 147 for his career)

Yeah, I thought about Bay, but the risk and the contract were too much for me. If there was a possibility for a pre-draft deal that would have allowed us to take on that salary in exchange for other considerations (such as a post-draft deal for one of your minor leaguers who had been protected) that would have been a possibility. But the scenario didn’t really allow for that.

JD. Good post but I think you make one assumption that has yet to be proven: that Jose is asking for this money….In other words, that he sent the Mets a basic idea of how much he would like.

So I think Wilpon just figured that Reyes is similar to Crawford and so the contract financial request would be in the same ballpark.
