Where we endeavor to stay positive about the 2011 Mets…

Ollie in Philly

Posted by JD on May 2, 2009

It’s about two hours to game time as I right this and Ollie Perez is in Philadelphia getting prepared to take the mound in Citizens Bank Park.  As Mets fans wonder which Ollie will show up, he’s stretching, long-tossing, and running sprints.  I’d give anything to know what’s going on in his head right now.  Is he nervous?  Confident?  This is a big start for Ollie, with his spot in the rotation (and the roster) possibly on the line.  He’s going to need to maintain cool and composed today more than ever.

We all know about the inconsistency that plagues his starts.  We know that the slightest bump in the road causes him to lose composure and fall apart.  His latest start was a great example; Daniel Murphy misplayed a relatively easy fly ball to left into a double, and Ollie surrendered a two-run homer to Jesus Flores, the very next batter.  What we don’t know is how composed and focused he’s going to be on any given day.

The talent is there.  His physical skills are obvious.  But good God, his concentration and composure are horrible.  He’s had good success against the Phillies in the past but that has no bearing on how he’s going to perform this afternoon.  As a fan, I’ve got faith in Ollie.  But as a realist, I’m beginning to doubt that he can put it together.  Hopefully today’s start is a step in the right direction.
