Murph at First…Update

Posted by JD on May 21, 2009

Nothing is better than posting your thoughts and finding out (via Twitter, or other means) that your thoughts are already outdated.  Happened to me tonight when I saw @lenno212 (David Lennon of NY Newsday) had tweeted the following:

“Manuel said Murphy will start the next four games at first base and he is done as a leftfielder.”

I’m torn on this one. I love that Manuel is a). giving him an opportunity, and b).putting pressure on him. But I also think Manuel is forcing a sample size issue.  Let’s say Murphy plays all 36 innings (assuming no extra innings). That’s going to net him about 16-18 at bats and maybe 40 chances at first. How is that enough to make an accurate decision?

I’m glad that the left field experiment is over. I just wish that Manuel hadn’t boxed in Murphy like that. I have no doubt that Jerry will totally ignore his comments tonight if it suits him. I just hope that Murphy can keep his head up and play through his inevitable mistakes.

Whatever Jerry says today may not match what he says tomorrow or next week.

Hopefully Murph can handle first base. We’ve seen enough to know he’s not an outfielder, and there’s no DH in the National League.

I am with Paul on this one. Manuel changes his mind (or has it changed for him) al the time. Give Murph 2 weeks to se how it goes at 1st.

After watching last night’s game, I’m more optimistic about his fielding at first. All it will take is a big game or two at the plate to force Jerry’s hand, but it’s going to be tough for him going against Dice-K, Beckett, and Wakefield.
