Where we endeavor to stay positive about the 2011 Mets…

Johan’s A Gamer!

Posted by JD on May 23, 2009

Adam Rubin of the Daily News posted a great Santana quote on his blog (Surfing the Mets) last night:

“Two outs. Two strikes. There’s no way I’m going to hit anybody intentionally,” Santana said. “After I hit him, he just stood there and started looking at me. I don’t appreciate that. I play the game the right way. I don’t want to hit him. But if you’re looking at me like that, you’re going to get it back because I’m a gamer, and that’s what I’m going to do. I just told him to take his base, and that was about it. But he was still looking at me and talking. And it fires me up. (emphasis added)”

It fires me up too, Johan! You want to talk about “Swagger”? You want to talk about “Edge”? Johan brings them both. He’s a competitor who can absolutely back it up. No Mets pitcher has inspired such total confidence since Dwight Gooden. Want proof? Let’s use Adjusted ERA+ as a guideline. Here are the Mets top 10:

Rank Player ERA+ Year
1. Jesse Orosco 247 1983
2. Dwight Gooden 228 1985
3. Tug McGraw 200 1971
4. Tug McGraw 197 1972
5. Tom Seaver 193 1971
6. Tom Seaver 175 1973
7. Al Leiter 170 1998
8. Johan Santana 166 2008
9. Tom Seaver 165 1969
10. Doug Sisk 162 1983

First off, Doug Sisk? Really? Wonders never cease. More importantly, Johan is currently sitting on an ERA+ of 292 (which leads both leagues, BTW). Unbelievable!

I’d completely forgotten what it was like to have a real-live CY Young caliber ace. We are lucky to have Johan on the Mets: every start is now must-see-TV. What an unbelievable start to a season.
