Memorial Day

Memorial Day is one of my favorite holidays. The unofficial start of summer, it’s the perfect time to fire up the grill, open a cold one, and hang out with friends and family. And it’s one of the best sports weekends of the year. The baseball season is in full swing, the NBA and NHL playoffs are heating up, and racing has it’s biggest day of the year with the Coca-Cola 400 600 and the Indy 500. Just an outstanding confluence of events, in my opinion.
Of course, Memorial Day means much more than that. According to Wikipedia:
Formerly known as Decoration Day, (Memorial Day) commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.
So please, on this beautiful Memorial Day weekend, take a moment to reflect on those who gave their lives in service to and defense of this country and on those who serve today. We owe a tremendous debt to these men and women who, in my opinion, often don’t get the thanks they deserve.
