Where we endeavor to stay positive about the 2011 Mets…

Mets Minutia – 12/1/09

Posted by JD on December 1, 2009

As you know, Joe Mauer won the American League MVP last week, posting a 170 OPS+ along the way. What you may not know is that this was the third highest OPS+ for a catcher since 1901, trailing only Mike Piazza (185 in 1997 and 172 in 1995). As Piazza was on the Dodgers in those seasons you may be wondering what this has to do with Mets Miuntia. Well, if you could magically place the 2009 Joe Mauer on the 2009 Mets, that 170 OPS+ would represent the highest single season OPS+ in club history, narrowly edging HoJo’s 169 in 1989 (see the full list here).

Mauer’s 170 OPS+ is only the 6th highest for the Twins (you go, Ed Delahantey!), but there are four other teams in the same boat as the Mets: the Angels, Brewers, Nationals and Tigers have never had a hitter that matched Mauer’s OPS+ from last season. Meaningless? Maybe, but that’s why it’s today’s Mets Minutia.
