Where we endeavor to stay positive about the 2011 Mets…

Flushing Frivolity – 12/16/09

Posted by JD on December 16, 2009

This will be the last Frivolity in the theme of lowest OPS+ (for now), I promise. But I couldn’t let it go. After putting together the list of worst OPS+ for the franchise and all-time, I wanted to see the ten worst in the current decade. I happen to think that the decade runs from 2001 to 2010, however, I’m not going to get all bent out of shape that some people don’t. As I see it, that means we get “End of Decade” lists in two consecutive years (I’m a total sucker for those things).

Anyway, on to the lists (as always, minimum of 502 at-bats):

Rk Player OPS+ PA Year Age
1 Neifi Perez 44 585 2002 29
2 Clint Barmes 47 535 2006 27
3 Angel Berroa 52 503 2006 28
4 Nick Punto 53 536 2007 29
5 Ronny Cedeno 54 572 2006 23
6 Brad Ausmus 54 502 2006 37
7 Mike Lansing 54 548 2000 32
8 Willy Taveras 55 538 2008 26
9 Brad Ausmus 55 509 2003 34
10 Juan Uribe 55 618 2002 22
11 Michael Bourn 57 514 2008 25
12 Ramon Santiago 59 507 2003 23
13 Jose Hernandez 60 571 2003 33
14 Cesar Izturis 60 593 2003 23
15 Vinny Castilla 60 578 2002 34
16 Emilio Bonifacio 61 509 2009 24
17 Omar Vizquel 61 575 2007 40
18 Rey Sanchez 61 555 2000 32
19 Jason Kendall 62 514 2007 33
20 Brent Abernathy 62 504 2002 24

Not only are there two ex-Mets on this list, but they both played for the team in seasons following the ones on the list. Not good, but not surprising. Other notables include potential Hall of Famer Omar Vizquel and notable rookie Emilio Bonifacio. I had no idea he struggled so much last season. It will be interesting to how he bounces back next season.

Long story short, I’ll pause long and hard before ripping a player next season but if they underachieve to this level, I’ll rip them mercilessly. It’s always good to have some perspective.
