Flushing Frivolity – 1/9/10

Posted by JD on January 9, 2010

The Dunston trifecta is in play! Thursday’s Frivolity was just an excuse to tell a personal story and Friday’s Frivolity revealed that Shawon Dunston owns a Mets franchise record. Today’s Frivolity expands on the concept: who has the longest consecutive streak of games played without a single walk in franchise history? Drumroll please…

Rk Name Year G AB OPS
1 Junior Ortiz 1983 54 156 0.558
2 Rusty Staub 1984 50 51 0.575
3 Mackey Sasser 1992 49 72 0.597
4 Jeff McKnight 1993 48 62 0.672
5 Timo Perez 01/02 46 133 0.699
6 Jeff Kent 1993 43 156 0.654
7 Dan Norman 79/80 43 65 0.523
8 Shawon Dunston 1999 39 93 0.784
9 Garry Templeton 1991 37 99 0.392
10 Chuck Hiller 65/66 37 60 0.722

So close, Shawon, but Junior Ortiz tops this list with 54 consecutive games without a walk. I couldn’t figure out how to get plate appearances (which are more relevant than AB’s for walks), but I think it’s good enough for government work. Junior walked four times that season. Incredibly, two of them came in the same game! Hang your head in shame, John Stuper. Had you not walked Junior twice, his streak would have lasted an additional eight games.

Some fun names appear ahead of Dunston: Rusty Staub (Le Grande Orange, pinch hitter deluxe), Mackey Sasser (in his final season as a Met, famously battling a serious case of the throwing yips), Jeff McKnight,* Timo Perez (run, dammit!), Jeff Kent (if steroid use blocks Roger Clemens, he may one day be the Hall of Famer I hate most), and Dan Norman (sorry Dan, I got nothing). Blasts from the past, and worthy companions for the mighty Shawon Dunston.

* McKnight’s Baseball Reference page references this Ralph Kiner quote: “Jeff McKnight was so excited about playing in the big leagues that he showed up in the ballpark and came in his pants.” I can’t find any verification for that quote at all, but it’s too good not to share.
