Section 518

Where we endeavor to stay positive about the 2011 Mets…

Flushing Frivolity – 1/14/10

Posted by JD on January 14, 2010

I spend a fair amount of time on the interwebs reading about and researching the New York Mets. The Flushing Frivolities is a semi-regular feature in which I attempt to share some of the more minute facts I come across. And by “minute”, I often mean “meaningless” or “inconsequential”.

I was messing around with Baseball Reference’s Play Index and looking at various pitcher rate stats when I decided to look at 2009 SO/BB rates, minimum 162 innings (or one inning per game). Here’s the bottom 25:

Rk Player SO/BB IP Year Age
1 Trevor Cahill 1.25 178.2 2009 21
2 John Lannan 1.31 206.1 2009 24
3 Doug Davis 1.42 203.1 2009 33
4 Jason Marquis 1.44 216.0 2009 30
5 Livan Hernandez 1.52 183.2 2009 34
6 Braden Looper 1.56 194.2 2009 34
7 Joe Saunders 1.58 186.0 2009 28
8 Mike Pelfrey 1.62 184.1 2009 25
9 Rick Porcello 1.71 170.2 2009 20
10 Kevin Millwood 1.73 198.2 2009 34
11 Scott Feldman 1.74 189.2 2009 26
12 Derek Lowe 1.76 194.2 2009 36
13 Ricky Romero 1.78 178.0 2009 24
14 Jon Garland 1.79 204.0 2009 29
15 Jeremy Guthrie 1.83 200.0 2009 30
16 Barry Zito 1.90 192.0 2009 31
17 Andy Pettitte 1.95 194.2 2009 37
18 Bronson Arroyo 1.95 220.1 2009 32
19 Carlos Zambrano 1.95 169.1 2009 28
20 Paul Maholm 1.98 194.2 2009 27
21 Jonathan Sanchez 2.01 163.1 2009 26
22 A.J. Burnett 2.01 207.0 2009 32
23 Jair Jurrjens 2.03 215.0 2009 23
24 Clayton Kershaw 2.03 171.0 2009 21
25 John Danks 2.04 200.1 2009 24

I knew Mike Pelfrey wasn’t a strike out machine so I was expecting to see him rank low, I didn’t figure he’d only beat out seven pitchers. He ranked 19th in 2008, which was more in line with what I expected. He might have to get that ratio to around 2.00 if the Mets can’t do anything to improve their defense. Otherwise, we could see him struggle again in 2010.
